The Selkirk Striders has also teamed up with other volkssport clubs and governmental agencies to sponsor walking events.
Lookout Pass Ski Resort was the starting point for the 10-kilometer
"Walk the Line" and "IdaMo" mountain walks. Held in
July 1994, it was an uphill-downhill trek covering two states and was
jointly sponsored by the Panhandle Pacers and the Selkirk Striders. Nearly
200 walkers from Idaho, Washington, Montana, Oregon, California and
British Columbia enjoyed the beautiful weather and spectacular scenery.
The 1995 August walk consisted of five events over two three-day weekends and took place at the Fairways Golf Course in Cheney, Washington, the Long Bridge walk in Sandpoint, Farragut State Park Goat Trek, the city walk in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and the Ida-Ewa walk at Friendship Park in Spokane, Washington. This undertaking was a joint effort between the West Plains Trekkers (in assocation with the City of Cheney Parks and Recreation Department), the Selkirk Striders (in association with the City of Sandpoint Parks and Recreation Department), the Panhandle Pacers, the Coeur d'Alene Volkssport Club and the Lilac City Volkssport Association.
Bill Stockman is one of the founding members of the Selkirk Striders. He
was elected president of the club in 1992 and has served in that office ever
since. A native of North Idaho, he started with the U.S. Forest Service in
1956 as a land surveyor with the engineering division, working in
North Idaho, eastern Washington and western Montana. He retired in 1987
but still works part-time as Bonner County land surveyor checking plats.
He got hooked on volkswalking in 1988 when his wife foolishly asked if he
wanted to go on a walk at Farragut State Park that was being put on by the
Panhandle Pacers. To date he has done more than 500 events and walked
over 10000 kilometers, which is the distance from the north pole to the
equator! He has walked in all of the lower 48 states west of the
Mississippi plus a few on the other side, not to mention Canada, Mexico,
England and Scotland! Here he's shown hard at work in his capacity as
club trailmaster. Another scenic North Idaho walk is in the planning stages.
Events sponsored by the Selkirk Striders attract all sorts! Molly Eskridge,
pictured here in 1993 at Samowen Park, was a fully paid-up member (and
unofficial mascot) of the club for many years before her passing.
